Canada secured their place in the 2012 Edition of the FIVB Volleyball World League with a decisive 3-0 win over Puerto Rico in Kingston in the final qualifying match.
Canada coach, Glenn Hoag: "This is a very big step for our program. World League means a lot of big matches, and that’s very important for our very young team. This is a group that we started in 2007, and it’s still growing and maturing. This will be a great test for our young guys. We will need to stay healthy. Our focus is now turned to the NORCECA Championships next week."
The two teams will now prepare for the NORCECA Championships, a qualifying event for the 2011 World Cup in Japan in November, which is the first step in the qualifying process for the London 2012 Olympics next year. Both Canada and Puerto Rico are in Pool A alongside Mexico and St. Lucia.
Week ago also Portugal qualified for World League 2012. Portugal beat China 3-1 in the first match, only need one point in the second match to qualify for the next year edition while China had to with a superior set-point ratio as the qualifying series is based on a formula of the winning team earning three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win and two points for a 3-2 and the loser for 3-0 or 3-1 would get no points and one point for a 3-2 loss. Thus Portugal collected four points ahead of China who got only two points.
