Hector Soto, the opposite of the Puerto Rican Men’s Volleyball National Team, was honoured as the 2006 Men Athlete of the Year, by ASES Awards of the Puerto Rico Sport Museum.
After excellent seasons last year with the Tiscali Cagliari club of the Italian League and the San Juan Beach Boys of the Puerto Rican Superior League, joined the National Team to comply with the international commitments.
He played a key role for Puerto Rico in winning the gold medal with a historic victory in straight sets over Cuba in the final of the Men’s Volleyball at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Soto was elected as the Most Valuable Player of the regional event.
Soto was the best scorer of the Men’s World Championship and helped to qualify Puerto Rico at the twelfth position of the 24-team event. Soto won 75,000 US dollars for his achievement and he shared some of the prize money among his teammates. He is the first Puerto Rican ever to win the top scorer award at a sporting event.
