A total of 17 teams participated at the Asian Men's Volleyball Championship which was held from August 31 to September 9 in Istora Stadium Jakarta.
Australia clinched the Asian Men's Volleyball top honor for the first time while Thailand produced a big surprise by dowing defending champion Japan in straight sets at the 14th Asian Men's Senior Volleyball Championship. We deserve the title because we have played ten matches since the qualifying round with record of 9-1. We have to accept other results which allow us to win the championship," Russel Borgeaud, head coach of Australian told the press after the closing ceremony. "We have competed since 1975 in Australia and had never won a single title. We are happy to win the title at last,"he said.
Australia finished first in eight-team round-robin round with six wins against one loss. Their best result in the previous champions were runner-ups in 1999 and 2001 editions. Defending champions Japan, Korea and China all finished the competition with an 5-2 win-loss record, but Japan took silver medal, and Korea was third, followed by China due to better points ratio. | Final ranking: | Individual awards: | | 1. | Australia | Best Scorer: Mohammadkasem Mohammad (Iran) | | 2. | Japan | Best Setter: Tomonaga Kosuke (Japan) | | 3. | Korea | Best Recever: Siriphum Supachai (Thailand) | | 4. | China | Best Libero: Yeo Oh-Hyun (Korea) | | 5. | Thailand | Best Spiker: Lee Kyung-Soo (Korea) | | 6. | Iran | Best Blocker: Lee Sun-Kyu (Korea) | | 7. | Indonesia | Best Server: Koshikawa Yu (Japan) | | 8. | Chinese Taipei | | | 9. | India | | | 10. | Kazakhstan | | | 11. | Qatar | | | 12. | Saudi Arabia | | | 13. | Pakistan | | | 14. | Sri Lanka | | | 15. | Vietnam | | | 16. | Maldives | | | 17. | Kuwait. | | from AVC
