ImageThe FIVB rankings didn’t turn out to mean much on Thursday as the fifth-ranked U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team fell to 13th-ranked Venezuela, 1-3 (18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 18-25) in their first-round FIVB World Championship match in Nagano, Japan. Team USA still has four pool-play matches to go and must finish in the top four to advance to the second round.

Team Captain Tom Hofffound the loss difficult to process. "It is really difficult to analyze this match right now,” Hoff said. “Obviously we are trying to think of all the things we have done wrong and how badly we executed it. We also have to recognize that Venezuela played a nice match, and we weren't good enough to beat them."

“Hopefully we can regroup and play good volleyball tomorrow.” McCutcheon said. “I think this is indicative of the way international men's volleyball is now. There are many good teams, and we knew that this would be a difficult match."
